• Calcium Confusion

    Hi guys

Firstly, thank you both SO much for creating this community. As someone who has always researched the heck out of any medical advice I’ve received for the past 10 years – I can’t tell you grateful I am for all of the time you put in & for the information you both provide

I recently found out I have Osteopenia in my left hip (after a precautionary Dexa scan due to family history).  My GP wasn’t too concerned and said the management was vitamin D and magnesium.  My vitamin D was 33 (30-100), so Im taking 10,000 per week and also taking magnesium & zinc.  My concern is that I am not getting enough calcium in my diet as I’ve reduced dairy substantially and am definitely not getting 1300 mg through the plants and Greek yoghurt.

Even though my blood calcium levels are normal, I have been prescribed the following calcium

The brand is OrthoCal.  I would appreciate any advice on whether the advice is sufficient? Thank you

Hi  have you watched the Calcium section in the Mineral Balance course? I explain how calcium absorption is actually a game of co-factors which is quite a complex system. It’s often not due to low calcium intake, but an inability to get calcium into the bones.

I’d recommend you watch the following videos which will help you understand it better:
    • risk factors for calcium imbalance
    • signs and symptoms of calcium imbalance (and additional tests to consider)
    • testing calcium balance
    • correcting calcium deficiency

Hopefully these videos will give you a better understanding (and I welcome your follow-up questions to clarify anything).
