Recent blood test
Posted by ivona_n on May 17, 2023 at 12:07 pmHi, I had my blood work done yesterday through work, once a year. Doctors have a certain scale when looking at markers and labeling them in the ok range compared to holistic doctors, so can you take a look at some of these markers. I’m actually surprised to see my alkaline phosphate was low. I’m not sure what my next steps are now. I have a few holistic doctors I can contact to do further blood panel, but now I’m a bit worried.Daniel replied 1 year, 6 months ago 3 Members · 9 Replies -

Hey ,
There are some pearls hidden here. To help you in the best way possible I would like to know if you experience any symptoms. It helps the interpretation of these lab values. It also helps to know if you experienced forms of stress when you had your labs drawn.
Alkaline phosphatase needs nutrients. For example, low zinc can result in lower alkaline phosphatase levels. In my experience, when Alkaline phosphatase is below 70, this is often the case. If you like to learn about symptoms that fit a low zinc status, I recommend you to take a look at the monthly course section and check the mineral balance course.
Your liver enzymes (AST, ALT) could indicate a need for more vitamin B6 for the same reasons. We like low values for these enzymes, but we like them not to be too low.
I’m honestly a little confused about your basophil score. You don’t seem to have any. You might want to check the laboratory and ask if this was because the lab report only shows 1 digit behind the dot.
Are you experiencing any symptoms like feeling cold, fatigue concentration problems, perhaps hair loss, maybe shortness of breath or hair loss? Your thyroid hormone production looks a little low to me. There are also clues that the size of your red blood cells is suboptimally high. This can be caused by a vitamin B6 insufficiency, but insufficiencies in folate and vitamin B12 can cause this as well.

Hi please let us know what symptoms you are experiencing as this will help provide a more tailored interpretation.
Were you recovering from an infection/illness when these were drawn? What time were these labs drawn and were you fasting? Are you taking any supplements currently? What was your perceived level of stress in the days leading up to blood draw?
In addition to Daniel’s great reply, I’d like to add a few more things to consider.
There are several markers that point to a need for supporting the liver/gallbladder:
• Direct bilirubin: 0.23 (I like to see it below 0.2) – could point to biliary tract congestion. D-limonene is usually my go-to. You can watch this video for more details on supporting liver/gallbladder.• Suboptimal low triglycerides: 35 (I like to see it between 70-100). This can happen when there’s liver/biliary dysfunction or in autoimmune type of dynamic or thyroid/adrenal hyperfunction (high stress for example). I would suggest running a full thyroid panel that includes antibodies since your T4 looked like it was struggling a bit.
• Increased monocytes 8% (I like to see it < 7%) can indicate the recovery phase of an infection (hence my question if you were sick recently), but it can also point to a need for liver support. • Your MCV has consistently been >89, and given the low GGT and historically lower liver enzyme markers (ALT/AST), there’s likely a need for more B vitamins, specifically B9/B12/B6. How is your diet? Do you consume animal proteins? If you can answer these questions and provide more details, we can probably guide you further.

Actually I have been having a sore throat for a week, which I’m going to see my PCP today about. I will ask to order a thyroid panel/b vitamin/zinc test. I also started taking zinc supplement for a week now because of the sore throat.
i just recently saw that biomaridian doctor and changed my supplements last month so I’m not sure if that plays a part in this deficiency.
I was thinking about the blood draw 2 days before it happened and i kept telling myself not to think about it. The day of the blood test I was nervous, as I don’t like getting my blood drawn or needles. When I was there for the blood test my whole body was shaking and had to lay down or otherwise I would faint.
other symptoms include:
1. hearing sensitivity, ears hurt randomly throughout the day my guess it was just sinuses because i was blowing my nose a lot the past couple weeks2. bad short term memory problems for a week now, they’re scaring me actually. I had memory problems last month and got an MRI of my brain which was fine, but the problem came back and worse.
3. depression for a couple months
sudden kidney sharp pain (mostly right one, for a month)
4. peeing more frequently than usual
5. constipation
6. peeing lime green(that started happening after I started taking Raw B-complex vitamin by Garden of Life)
7. sharp stinging at the opening of my vulva about a month ago, it comes and goes. was going to see my obgyn about it, but the problem seemed to go away I think.
8. spotting 2 days before period this month. this has never happened to me. my obgyn said if the blood is not soaking through its normal so i didn’t get asked to be seen
9. sudden random fatigue for a couple weeks now. waking up in the morning like i just got hit by a truck.
10. Major hair shedding! it’s making me crazy
11. a little chest congestion and shortness of breath when i’m walking at faster speeds. I have to take deeper breaths more when i’m on my walks. -
thank you for sharing this additional information. Unless your doctor wants to run labs to see what’s causing your sore throat, I would actually wait 2 weeks after you’re feeling better to get those other labs drawn to get a proper baseline level, and not when you’re sick.

I was thinking about the blood draw 2 days before it happened and i kept telling myself not to think about it. Stress was high that weekend before the blood draw, arguing with partner and mothers day (i lost my mom years ago, it was my sisters birthday too, whom I also lost a years ago.) The day of the blood test I was nervous, as I don’t like getting my blood drawn or needles. When I was there for the blood test my whole body was shaking and had to lay down or otherwise I would faint. I was fasting for the blood test and it was at 9am.

ok, i’ll update you on what he wants to do then. thank you.

the doctor said I had tonsillitis and was given doxycycline antibiotics. I also showed the nurse my blood work results and printed your comments about what the levels should be and the nurse said that there is nothing concerning about my results and you were wrong about your scale, so she didn’t want to give me a thyroid panel. So, I will wait the 2 weeks after the antibiotics to get my holistic doctor to do my thyroid panel.

I’m not surprised since conventional doctors look at the reference ranges with a very different look than functional medicine.

I hope you aren’t worried about the color of your urine. Riboflavin, one of the B vitamins, can cause urine to be bright yellow. If you like to know if the B complex is the cause, just stop taking it for a couple of days. Your urine should turn into its old color quite fast.
Some symptoms can be related to a suboptimal thyroid hormone balance. You can find a complete course about thyroid health in the monthly courses. I would watch the video called ‘Signs & symptoms of Thyroid Dysfunction’ and if you feel this is you watch the video ‘Testing Thyroid Function’. Your previous labs from August 2022 showed evidence of this as well. Symptoms like feeling cold, memory problems, hair loss, constipation and depression can all be related to this.
Shortness of breath is often more a sign of anemia. I’m glad you are taking B vitamins. Usually, after 6 weeks of taking B vitamins some form of improvement should already be noticeable.
