    Hello guys,

I went into my dentist’s office today thinking I was getting a consultation about removing my upper right wisdom tooth and it turned out that I was actually scheduled to do the procedure and ended up going through with it as the tooth had a cavity and was causing pain.

I was prescribed antibiotics and Voltaren, I’m hesitant to take the antibiotics but the dentist was recommending it to avoid infection.

Any tips on how I can take the antibiotics with the least damage? Also, any tips on naturally speeding up healing and managing pain after wisdom tooth extraction?

    Thank you,

    Mariam

    Hey ,

The best thing I can recommend you do is to start taking probiotics during and after the antibiotics. Antibiotics can wipe out bacterial competition for yeast and fungi or bacterial strains that are more resistant to antibiotics. Taking probiotics can help prevent a yeast/fungal overgrowth.

I often prefer Food-based probiotics since they provide a wider range of strains. In the library, you can find some good recipes. For example kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha or beet kvass. You can find the recipes here in the Beverages & Fermented Foods tab under the recipe section!

If you are looking for brands I like to use brands containing multiple strains like for example Ther-Biotic Complete from Klaire Labs.

I feel the same way about antibiotics and also like to avoid taking them “as prevention” knowing how much havoc just 1 course can have on the gut microbiome. In the event of an infection, I know they’re there if needed but I personally like to avoid them preventatively.

However, in the event they are needed, it’s still a good idea to be supporting the gut microbiome with probiotics as Daniel mentioned above, but at a separate time of day from the antibiotics. And since antibiotics wipe out both the “good and bad” bacteria, this creates an environment that is favorable for yeast to overgrow. That’s why it’s not uncommon for yeast infections to occur after a course of antibiotics.

The probiotic by Klaire Labs called Ther-Biotic ABx Support can be taken during a course of antibiotics (but taken at different times of the day). In addition to containing lacto/bifido strains, it also contains S. Boulardii -a type of beneficial yeast that can help prevent opportunistic yeast from overgrowing. Any other separate S Boulardii supplement would do the same trick.

To help with healing, I would encourage you to watch my post that I did after I cleaned out my cavitations from my wisdom teeth extractions. Please note – Dr. Manjari who is an expert in homeopathy corrected me and recommends hypericum instead of arnica where there is frank bleeding because arnica (although it’s great for pain), acts like aspirin so oozing can potentially increase.

    Hope you recover swiftly!

Thank you for your recommendations Daniel! I have been taking the probiotics from the first day I started the antibiotics and will continue. Will definitely try the food options too!

Thank you for your recommendations B! Recovery has been going well so far, I just need to continue with the probiotic supplements and foods.

I’m glad to hear you’re recovery has been smooth. Keep in mind that probiotic supplementation may be needed for at least 6-9 months post antibiotic treatment, which is why a fermented food-based approach is usually more sustainable.
