• Powder v Capsule form

    Hi B. & Daniel,

What is the difference in terms of potency and efficiacy between capsule and powder form.

For example, I take slippery elm, DGL and marshmallow root powders mixed in water 30mins before eating. This coats my food pipe and stomach.

However, I’ve also taken Thorne GI encap in the past containing the same ingredients plus aloe vera.

I’ve never understood which form could be more effective or the difference.

Hi @Naveed Aslam for your purpose of coating the esophagus and stomach lining, powder is a better option.

If a client has reduced digestive capacity, I often recommend they empty the contents of the capsule over food or in water to help with absorption.

Capsules on the other hand are helpful in situations where a delayed release is needed or for protecting sensitive tissue like in HCL betaine for example.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you for your quick response B.

    Very helpful.

Would powder form not protect the tissues if wanting to use betaine hcl?

@Naveed Aslam no absolutely not. You never want to take HCL betaine which is very acidic without it being in a capsule. It will burn!!

@Bernadette Abraham no, I meant taking powder form of the slippery elm, DGL and marshmallow root powders with betaine hcl capsule. Could this work as well instead of the capsule forms.

@Naveed Aslam oh sorry, I misunderstood. Yes if someone has done a good amount of soothing herbs first, then a trial of low dose of HCL betaine in capsule form, mid-meal with a protein rich meal should be ok. If any burning sensation is felt however within 5 mins of taking the HCL, then the dose might be too high.

For more details on HCL dosage, please refer to THIS handout.

    B. I just noticed, I’ve still got some Thorne GI encap capsules left. Should I have them with food or 30mins before food. Can I open them up and mix in water or have them neat?

@Naveed Aslam best away from food. The capsule can be opened and mixed with water if preferred.
