Hey B and Team,
Posted by drjasminekottait1 on April 22, 2024 at 6:41 pmThank you for all your support and lovely courses. My 13 mo old got sick. He has fever that only goes down 1-2 hours with fever reducers, fluids in the middle ear, he is coughing constantly with a lot of phlegm, has difficulty breathing and vomits phlegm occasionally. My pediatrician is suspecting bronchitis. Viral panel came Negative for the common viruses but he is thinking bacterial infection has started after the viral. He prescribed Zithromax as an antibiotic as he fears pneumonia. My baby is already taking Vit D , probiotics and sambucal and I have Vit C. Anything else I can help him fight whatever it is he is fighting. thank u loads

Hey @Yasmin Kottait,
I’m sorry to hear your 13 months is struggling, but you are already doing a great job with the vitamin D, probiotics and vitamin C. With antibiotics, I usually recommend a blend that also contains the protective yeast species S. Boullardii. Yeast is not so much affected by the antibiotics. The drugs do, however, wipe out the bacterial competition which can allow yeast to thrive/surge.
You can find more information on how to choose probiotics HERE if you are unsure if you’ve chosen the right formula.
If you are worried about the coughing: with pneumonia I wouldn’t recommend using something like cough medicine even if it’s natural. The phlegm comes from the longs and coughing helps the body to get rid of the infection.
I’m not exactly sure how long he is experiencing symptoms. Usually with treatment, most types of bacterial pneumonia are cured in 1–2 weeks. During that time, make sure he drinks enough and he gets enough rest!
I hope he gets well soon!

Thank you Daniel for your wishes and kind words. Yes that’s great idea. Are there no specific probiotics for children? The one am using now is Biogaia does not have yeast strains. One more thing for me I remember Bernadette had told me before I had intolerance to yeasts which probiotic is best for me then. Thankfully he has been experiencing it for two days and hopefully it stays at bronchitis. thank you for your time answering and for the great support

Hi @Yasmin Kottait you didn’t mention if you’ve already started giving him the antibiotics or not, but it sounded to me as though you wanted to try avoiding them? Daniel gave you great advice if you’re choosing the antibiotic route.
But if you’re looking to support the virus naturally, then when my kids are sick with a viral infection, I always give liquid zinc as it helps stop viral replication. In addition to high dose vit D, I also give high dose vitamin A to support the immune system until they’re feeling better. You can read more about the protocol I use to support their immune system HERE.
And since it’s suspected to be viral, please take a look at this protocol HERE. It’s written for children with HFMD, but it will also work for any viral infection. If it’s still early-on, definitely consider the homeopathic support called Oscillococcinum.
Now given that the doctor is suspecting bronchitis, you may want to ask him about nebulizing NAC (20mg according to study below). There is clinical research done on the safety and effectiveness of nebulized NAC in infants for supporting lung health, and bronchitis specifically. I will share a few studies you can read as well (they are linked below):
Effectiveness of Nebulized N-Acetylcysteine Solution in Children with Acute Bronchiolitis
Complementary and alternative medicine for the treatment of bronchiolitis in infants: A systematic review
Hope he gets well soon!

@Bernadette Abraham thanks B as always for your great support and care. Yes I was trying to avoid it. Unfortunately his cough got super worse yesterday and I had to give it:( I had a look at the protocol. What about the doses for an infant? Like of Vitamin D what’s the increased dose? I give 400iu per day and Vitamin A and Zinc. Do you have specific formulations for children or I just buy those and mix them in water. I checked the link it’s full script I remember that takes time anything sooner 🙁 what can I buy Tom for eg to help his immunity fight whatever it is he is fighting. Thanks for your help

@Yasmin Kottait
For infants and children less than 2 years old, I follow Fried’s Rule:
The dose of an herb is obtained by multiplying the child’s age in months by the adult dose and then dividing the result by 150. An example would be if an adult tincture dosage is 20 drops. For an 8 month old child you would take 20 x 8 to get 160. Then divide: 160/150 = which would be approximately 1 drop of tincture.
In THIS immune support protocol, I share liquid/powders that are suitable for children. I always keep these as part of my medicine cabinet because they aren’t always available locally and like you said, they take about 2 weeks to arrive to Dubai.
If you’ve started the antibiotics, consider getting the S Boulardi from a local pharmacy to prevent yeast overgrowth. Something like Florastor Kids.
