  • Bye bye UTI – The power of Uva Ursi, D-Mannose & Cranberry Extract!

I’m telling you. This combo is powerful at stopping a urinary tract infection from brewing into something more serious that requires antibiotics.

With travel and the stress of the launch of B Better, combined with a lack of hydration (I haven’t been carrying around a water bottle), my immune system for sure took a hit and allowed a brewing infection.

I brought all of my “first aid” supplements with me on this trip, but I did not expect a brewing UTI… haven’t had one since my 20s. So what did I do? I researched health food companies in my area and called around until I found one that has a good selection of supplements. For those in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) the store is called Healthy Planet in Trainyards.

I ended up buying Nature’s Way Uva Ursi and NOW Mannose Cranberry (pictured below) because they had a good dose of each ingredient, the price was reasonable, and the non-medicinal ingredient list was clean (I’ll share a resource on how to shop for clean supplements soon!).

Uva ursi is 480mg per capsule and d-mannose is 450mg per capsule, the cranberry is 250mg per capsule.

The last thing I wanted on this trip is to have to visit the doctor and take a course of antibiotics, so I went high with the dosages.

Some background first as to why these ingredients work so well:

    • D-mannose is a natural sugar that doesn’t get absorbed in the human digestive tract but instead provides desirable food for bacteria.⁣ This causes them to release their grip of the urinary tract lining and get flushed out in urine. ⁣Hence the importance of drinking plenty of fresh filtered water.
    • Similarly, cranberry EXTRACT metabolites impair e-coli adhesion to the urinary tract wall. Important that it’s cranberry extract and not cranberry juice that is high in sugar which worsens the problem because it IS absorbed in the GI tract unlike d-mannose. Avoid all forms of sugar and sweeteners!
      ⁣⁣
    • Uva ursi is an herbal anti-microbial and works better at an alkaline pH so it’s encouraged to eliminate (at least temporarily) anything acidic (i.e. soda, coffee, black tea, alcohol, cranberry juice (sugary), dairy, animal protein, grains, vitamin C (acidic).
      ⁣⁣
Here’s the protocol I used to stop a UTI in 3 days, and luckily not need antibiotics (please check with your practitioner for your needs):
    1.  Uva ursi (leaf): 4 capsules, 3 x per day with LOTS of water. Very important for flushing out the bacteria!
    2. D-mannose with cranberry: 2 capsules, 2 x daily

On day 2, I was still feeling the twinge, so I added in 1 tsp of Biotics Research IAG powder (arabinogalactans), 3 x per day, to help my immune system fight off the brewing infection.

    Day 3: UTI gone!

Of course dosing needs to be discussed with your practitioner but generally speaking:

    • 1-2g daily of D-mannose has been shown in literature to help with prevention (if someone is prone to UTIs) and 1-2g, 2 x daily to help counter an existing infection.⁣
    • Similarly, 1-2g per day of uva ursi and should not be taken longer than 7 days
⁣⚠️ NOTE: While d-mannose is quite safe for everyone, uva ursi is not recommended for children or those with liver disease.⁣

And of course, reach out to a physician for a urine culture if symptoms don’t improve quickly.

    Wow this is so helpful!
I just came back from my pap smear and doc noticed I have a slight yeast infection! WOW I haven’t gotten one of those in so long that I quickly went online and wondered how to tackle it. Thankfully, this website exists! *whew*
We recently moved and as soon as we moved, it came up. I am thinking the stress from the move , the water ( we haven’t changed the filters for the showers yet and eating more out during the move due to the everything not going as planned added to this imbalance).
Thank you so much for sharing this info! I am ordering everything as I type!

I just re-read your message and noticed you mentioned yeast… for yeast it’s a different protocol than UTI which is bacterial! I will post it today for you!

what urinary probiotic are you referring to exactly? I always like to take a food first approach and supplement as needed, so I would actually encourage consuming more fermented foods on a regular basis (I share many recipes in the resource section of your library). And for my clients who are prone to chronic UTIs, I recommend they take 1000mg d-mannose daily as a preventative measure.

Oh I had gotten these supplements already, I’d have to return them.

My doctor mentioned Vaginitis >.< It's been quite a long time since I've experienced such a thing, I am not uncomfortable but theres a slight fishy odor. She recommended Boric Acid --->use 600mg vaginal daily for 14 days. Thoughts?

for your own knowledge, first understand from your doctor if it’s bacterial or yeast. From the “fishy” symptom and recommendation of boric acid, I’m assuming it’s bacterial. Here’s a description of each:

Vaginitis is an inflammation or infection of the vagina which can cause odor, abnormal vaginal discharge, or inflammation.

    Gardnerella aka Bacterial Vaginosis is:
    1. Acidic (pH paper can document this)
    2. Often has fishy odor(from amine production)
    3. is an overproduction of H2O2 that allows the organism to over populate
    4. On a slide it shows up as little black dots around the cells(pepper around a fried egg is how it looks under microscope)

    Candida (yeast infection) is:
    1. Higher pH (than BV)
    2. Rarely has any odor
    3. Is usually white, thicker curd like discharge which often can be seen on vaginal walls and cervix
    4. On a kOH slide-looks like a strand( or budding hyphae)-NOTHING like the fried egg and pepper around edges of BV.

Your doctor’s recommendation of boric acid can actually help both BV and vaginal yeast infections. Check this out: https://ichgcp.net/clinical-trials-registry/NCT00799214

    Please keep me posted.

This is exactly what she wrote in my diagnosis “2. Vaginitis:
    – White vaginal discharge and patient complaint of fishy odor from vagina consistent with yeast infection”. [7SF5scGB2AFrgsXP63.gif]

ok, so she’s diagnosed it as a yeast infection. As I’ve shared in the study above, boric acid can help with both so follow your doctor’s recommendation. It’s an old school remedy that does wonders!

For rapid symptom relief with yeast infections, I’ve also recommended opening up a capsule of a high dose lactobacillus probiotic (i.e. Renew Life Women’s vaginal probiotic), blend it with a tiny bit of coconut oil, and applying it topically to their labia and the first inch of two of the vaginal tract prior to bed.  Wear clean, cotton underwear to bed and then bathe in the morning.  Doing this for several days in a row can help to wipe out occasional yeast infections which thrive in an alkaline environment. The lactobacillus probiotic creates a more acidic pH where yeast can’t thrive. The probiotic can also be taken orally morning and evening.
