    Hi everyone,
My name is Sarah, I am 28 years old and live in Florida. I am late to the party, but I was busy with finishing up school and taking my boards for Physical Therapy Assistant, and also renovating/moving into a new home!
I have known Bernadette (Bernie) since I was super young… I think 10 years old or so. I am SO EXCITED for the B Better community and to be a part of it! I have unfortunately had gut issues for pretty much my entire life, and have never fully figured out why everything is so dysfunctional. I am always researching things and asking questions about my health concerns, no doctors have EVER given me answers that help, but Bernie has always been supportive and helpful of my issues. My problem is I have never had a routine and stuck with it so that is probably why I can’t get better and STAY better. I am hoping that with this community I can really stick to it and become my best self!
So, my gut has always been my main concern, I grew up with chronic constipation, a nervous stomach, bloat, and acne. Recently, within the last few years my symptoms have gotten worse, I have eczema-like rashes, dry, itchy skin and scalp, joint pain, numbness and tingling in extremities, fatigue, weight gain, bloat, occasional hives, anxiety… and the list goes on.
I am really looking forward to learning more from Bernadette and this community and bettering my health before it spirals out of control!

    Hey Sarah,

First of all: welcome to the community! My name is Daniel and I’m here to help as well. you know B since you were 10? You must have some interesting stories to share about B! One day you should share some!

Anyway, what piques my interest is you sharing you could never stick with your routine. (And trust me, most people if not everyone in the community can relate to that). I was wondering: what problems do you run into?

I hope you will find some relief through the material here on B-better!

haha – I’ve been “boring” pretty much all my life so not sure  will have any interesting stories to share… other than maybe how we weathered 2 hurricane storms together in Florida. That was the scariest, most WILD experience ever!!!

We had walkie talkie code names for each other… Sarah’s was “Noodle”. I can’t remember what mine was… good times for sure.

Thanks for the welcome! So about sticking to a routine… it has always been difficult for me to maintain a routine and I like to blame it on the fact that my schooling and work schedules were always fluctuating so I was never good a staying consistent with exercising or eating clean, or whatever else there might be. I am really good at it when I have a set routine, but my issue is that once I start seeing results and getting better I fall off the wagon again (which you would think it would be the opposite) I absolutely love a nice dinner/drinks out and just hanging out and trying good food (it’s my boyfriend and I’s way chill out after a long week and something I always look forward to). So, getting rid of that pleasure is hard for me. I think that now that I have finished school and am working on finding a career that I will enjoy, I will be able to really get set into a routine and follow it, at least that is my goal.

I think a lot of people can relate to that! I myself included from time to time . What helps me personally (it might not help you, but I will share my experience anyway) is asking myself if the pleasure is worth the pain.

Let’s make this personal. For example, if I eat too much, I can feel really bloated for 3 days. So when the temptation is there, I ask myself in advance: is it worth the 3 days of feeling like crap?  Is this the price I am willing to pay?

When I am asking myself these questions, I usually make better choices. And that’s the whole point. Not aiming for perfection, but aiming for better choices. I for example in restaurants will avoid hyper-palatable food choices so I can stay in control.

Another thought that really helps me: I consider food as a ‘present’ to my future self. This present can be either positive: (support for the activities I want to do, feeling good, etc) or negative (discomfort, guilt trips, contributing to a body with lesser resilience, etc)

By considering food as a present, I usually fall off the wagon much shorter. My new meal is my next opportunity to give myself a present.

I hope this helps a little bit!

I do the same. When people ask me how “I’m so good all the time” and how I resist temptations, for me it’s simply imagining how that food/beverage/activity is going to make me feel. If it doesn’t serve me, it’s an easy no thanks. It’s an empowered choice vs. will power which is only a finite resource in our brain before we resort to old habits.
