Hi  – the 2 main issues debated is the high heat temperature & the materials used. So let’s explore both:

    Temperature:
High temperature cooking can can expose us to the risk of toxic compounds such as acrylamides from starchy foods (potatoes, cereal grains, bread), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heterocyclic amines (HCA) from cooking muscle meats (beef, pork, poultry, fish). These are potential carcinogens.

Here are tips to reduce these:
    • Avoid overcooking, heavy crisping, charring or burning the food
    • Cook food longer at lower temperature (<350F)
    • Soaking or lightly cooking/parboiling and dab drying starches beforehand can help retain the moisture while reducing the time and temperature needed to cook them
    • Adding antioxidant rich herbs like rosemary to animal proteins can help to counter the effects of some of the inflammatory compounds like PAH and HCA

    Materials Used:
Many air-fryers are made from harmful materials like PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, & plastics that can pollute our air and leach into our food.

Solution? Look for an air fryer that is stainless steel (or has a stainless steel interior) and glass rather than non-stick coatings and plastic.

Here are some stainless steel options:
    • Galanz 0.9 Cu Ft Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven
    • Emeril Lagasse Power AirFryer Oven 360

    Here are some glass options:
    • Big Boss Oil-less Air Fryer
    • Oyama TRO-110C Turbo Convection Oven

Ceramic coated can be another option but I'm still looking for one.

None of these are perfect but they are better options than the plastic ones.

Would love to know your thoughts on the Ninja Foodi 10 in 1 Pro Air fryer (stainless steel)

looks like a great stainless steel option. Do you have this model already?

thanks for the great topic. If you don’t mind, I will jump in here and ask a question to
too. I have recently bought an instant pot mainly for the pressure cooker function which also came with air fryer option. It is unfortunately not steel container for the air fryer but I am planning to use parchment paper for
that. Will this be sufficient? Or shall I look for steel containers compatible with instant pot?

But re your notes for ‘the longer cooking times at lower temp”; this is the complete opposite of what pressure cookers do. I had read in so many reports before that pressure cookers are actually quite a healthy way cooking as the cooking time is short so nutritions are preserved. And I am a huge fan of them due to their practicality as well.
that would be great if you can share your view on pressure cookers as well? Thanks

unfortunately using parchment paper is not sufficient since there will be off-gassing within the container. It’s preferable to find a stainless steel container that is compatible with your Instant Pot.

Pressure cookers are different because it cooks food using high pressure steam using a liquid base. It’s different to air fryers which is dry heat cooking. I personally love my stainless steel pressure cooker and use it often. I also love how practical they are.

Such a relief that my precious pressure cooker is still a thumbs up
Ok noted. I will look for a steel container for the instant pot. Thanks so much Bernedette
