KBMO testing
Posted by s_mohler on January 20, 2024 at 5:16 pmHey Bernie and Daniel!! I was looking into the KBMO FIT test for food sensitivity, I was wondering if either of you know if something like this would be offered from an MD through insurance before I go ahead and purchase it? Also, does something like this test for histamine sensitivity, or would that be a different test? I am starting to look into MCAS and if I am experiencing that.
Thanks!

Hi Sarah,
I have used Precision Point Intestinal Advanced Intestinal Barrier Assessment to check for leakygut and histamine intolerance.
Please search for the words “Precision Point Intestinal Advanced Intestinal Barrier Assessment.”
This lab test checks for leakygut, DAO and Histamine. You’ll see my full test results here as a PDF file.
The lab is in the US and involves a blood withdrawal. I’m not sure where you are based or how you will be able to purchase the kit.
I don’t think KBMO checks for histamine intolerance. B and Daniel will confirm.

Hi @Sarah Mohler – no unfortunately this test isn’t usually covered by insurance through an MD. It also doesn’t test for histamine sensitivity. Instead it checks for foods/additives that are causing an inflammatory immune response, and the progression of leaky gut. Did you watch our interview with the owner of KBMO, Mr. James White? If not, you can watch that interview HERE where he also goes through various case studies and analyses different test results.
For histamine intolerance, you can look at the DAO test (the enzyme that breaks down histamine) to check your ability to breakdown histamine. To save on cost, you can also try a histamine elimination diet for a month to see how you feel. That’s often enough confirmation that histamine is at play without having to spend a lot of money on testing.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey @Sarah Mohler,
Could I ask you what you hope the KBMO diet will help you with? Perhaps we could give you some additional tips!

@Daniel Schepers I was just hoping to find my true food sensitivities , I have been on and off avoiding foods… and I still just don’t know for sure. But I feel like lately, I have been noticing symptoms related to histamine related reactions. I am working on getting into a rheumatologist / immunologist to see if they can help at all too.
-
Perfect! Thank you. I was watching one of your case studies on this topic too. But I am going to go watch the interview as well!

@Sarah Mohler,
Am I right you’re experiencing some problems with your joints? If so, we have a handout that you might find interesting right here!
If you could describe your symptoms, I might be able to help you even better!
-
@Daniel Schepers I cannot open the handout. Where else can I find it?
So I have a ton of symptoms, that I am noticing are abnormal.
-chronic constipation (much better than in past years) more so around my menstrual cycle, better throughout the rest of the month
-terrible menstrual cramps, heavy cycles, intense mood swings during cycle, temperature regulation (hot flashes)
-abdominal pain and sensitivity to the touch almost always
– rosacea acne
-hives from alcohol (only drink on the weekends) but have tried to clean up my choices. I react worse to sugary drinks
– joint pain
– swollen / painful fingers mostly in the AM
– numbness in hands, mostly in the AM
– fascial restrictions throughout body
– fatigue
– itchy/flaky scalp, hair thinning/loss
– itchy skin , history of dermatitis , I feel it when I have a flare up from something – not sure what
– brain fog, cannot focus (ADD like symptoms)
– anxiety
– gas and bloating
– palpitations
– weakness, especially in upper extremities
– neural tension throughout UE
– headaches , not very often but had a debilitating migraine last month that put me out for 4 days and have never had one that awful before
– sensitivity to smells and noise
– nausea
– vertigo
– feeling of ants on skin in bilateral shoulders and arms occasionally, only when clothing is touching skin
– reoccurring yeast infections , post cycleAnd I’m sure there is more that I can think of… but that is a majority , unfortunately
– I’ve done a stool test, which showed high zonulin, I have mostly just been staying away from gluten for almost a year now, but haven’t done much gut repair.
-
@Daniel Schepers I am also due for blood work, but I wanted to ask you and @Bernadette Abraham if you have an idea of what labs I should get in addition to the regular ones.
-
Hey @Sarah Mohler,
I don’t know why you can’t access the link, but to help you I’ve uploaded the handout below!
I didn’t realize you were experiencing all these symptoms when I asked the question. I’m sorry to hear!
I like to kindly ask you if you could post these symptoms in a new post! I think this can be a learning opportunity for everyone. The answer I will write is probably a bit longer as well!
It would help if you could add your age in this post, a little history of when the most important symptoms started to appear and what your diet looks like right now and the last 2 years. If you are on any medications (even birth control if this applies to you) or have been on medications for the last years, that would help as well!

Hi @Sarah Mohler – did you end up getting any blood tests done? A good starting point is always the basic CBC, CMP, Inflammation, and vitamins (B12 and Vitamin D) which we have a whole course on now. These are typically run as part of annual physical in the US so none of these are considered “atypical” and are generally covered by insurance if you have any.
You can find the expanded list of these markers to request from your doctor in this guide HERE on the last page.
So based on the symptom list you mentioned, I would suggest the following:
CBC with differentials
CMP typically includes Liver Panel, Kidney Panel, Electrolytes (please make sure they check direct bilirubin as part of the liver panel and not just total bilirubin)
hs-CRP
vitamin D
vitamin B12
RBC magnesium
Full thyroid panel (TSH, Free T4, Free T3, anti-TPO, anti-TG, Reverse T3)
I would definitely recommend the KBMO test since many of your symptoms could be due to food sensitivities. And it also checks the degree or phase of intestinal permeability (leaky gut).
Once you receive results, please upload them and we can help with functional interpretation and guide you further from there.
