Too much at once?
Posted by R-S on September 3, 2025 at 9:04 amGood morning Bernadette,
I’m in a bit of a confused situation due to a sudden increase in gut and mental health symptoms since yesterday afternoon, and would love your advice on what could’ve happened, if possibly I am going too fast while also doing nervous system work? I’m sharing exactly what I added/ate and how my body responded, because it feels like something shifted.
Sept 1
• 7:30am – Started sole water
• 8:50–9:00am (breakfast) – Pan-cooked chicken + a few slices sweet potato + sautéed bell peppers & green beans + 1 slice dragon fruit
• ~40 mins later BP dropped (I did walk after the meal)
• 11:45am – Cabbage juice 150 mL → head pressure + burning in abdomen (subsided later)
• 12:50pm (lunch) – Steak with zucchini and rice; walked after
• 1:50pm – Half mug marshmallow root
• 2:50pm – Pumpkin seeds + slice of dragon fruit
• 3:40pm – ½ tsp sea moss gel
• 5:00pm – Blueberries
• 6:00pm- daily dose of Duloxetine
• 7:40pm (dinner) – Chicken patty with olives, cucumber, lettuce
• 8:40pm – Slippery elm (dropped to once a day)
• 9:40pm – Spoon of coconut oil + honey- followed with L theanine and Lemon Balm tea.
• On/off headache, sneezing, exhaustion through the day
Sept 2
• 7:30am – 500 mL water with sole
• 8:20am – Cabbage juice ~100 mL
• 9:00am (breakfast) – Coconut milk with chia seeds, blueberries, pumpkin seeds, honey
• 11:15am – Quinoa tabouleh (parsley, cucumber, green onions, pomegranate- modest amount of each) followed by 1 tsp sea moss gel
• 12:10pm – Tried Mag Phos cell salt, within minutes felt lightheaded and “off”
• 12:40pm – Rice with meat and broth; 12:55pm slice of dragon fruit, BP started dropping and still lightheaded.
• 3:00pm – Rice with meat & potato stew, didn’t sit well, pressure in chest and tightness, slow creeping discomfort continuing.
• 4:00pm – Marshmallow root, still flaring at this point
• 5:20pm – ¼ L-theanine for intense anxiety, sudden severe panic attack with abdomen/chest tightness, BP still low regardless.
• No BM this morning until ~6:00pm; BP stayed low, couldn’t eat from abdominal discomfort and general mental unease
• 7:45pm – Duloxetine
• 9:00pm – Slippery elm
• 9:36pm – Spoon of coconut oil + honey
Sept 3 (this morning)
• Woke with a hollow, sick feeling in my abdomen (continuing from yesterday)
• Thankfully had normal bowel movement this morning, but still feel weak and unsettled
What’s worrying me:
• Since Mag Phos yesterday, it feels like something shifted: head heavy/unsteady, achy body, racing mind
• BP has been low (95–97/65–70)
• Not sure if this was the cell salt, food combos, or adding too many “soothing/cleanse” at once. Did any of these commonly trigger this? Was there a poor choice/portion?
Up until Mag Phos, the last two days felt calm and manageable.
1. Do you recommend pausing any items temporarily (which ones) and in what order to re-introduce? Could this be from any of them?
2. Any adjustments to portions/timing (especially cabbage juice, sea moss, marshmallow, slippery elm) to avoid the head pressure/BP dips?
3. Could this just be a normal shift in gut health and best to continue as I am and just be with it?
Just your advice in general please. I spoke to my homeopath as well yesterday, asked about cell salts and he said they’re okay to take all at once and to just observe what comes up, which I did. He also said that probably the introduction of all the herbal products could’ve played a role. I wanted to check further with you, what could have happened? I am worried to eat this morning to avoid further flaring up (irrational I understand, but want to check with you and what you think) – hope it’s all clear, please feel free to further inquire if I missed anything.
*Edit: I did eat, I also had some chia seeds before eating, I ate around 80 grams of a beef burger patty, with a side of steamed Zuchinni and Okra and an olive and half a cucumber and a slice of dragon fruit, I did walk directly after and sipping on my second round of 500 ml with some chia and sole in it as well, seem to have the tightness in chest and throat after eating, could it have increased since I dropped the slippery elm to once a day in the vening? Also didn’t take any cabbage or sea moss or any therapies just yet today or could just be I am still very sensitive that even a cell salt could have done this or even the broth (long cooked meat) and not pan cooked, hoping to get some clarity about what could have happened – just thinking out loud again.
Thank you as always,
R

Hi @R-S, yes it’s likely that you’re doing too much too fast. Remember low & slow. It’s important to allow your body time to adjust to anything new which also allows you to determine if it’s causing any symptoms. I often recommend 3 days when introducing anything new.
If the symptoms started when you introduced Mag Phos, that’s likely the culprit. So cut out anything that was introduced too quickly, allow your body to get back to baseline, and then reintroduce them one at a time with enough days in between to assess how it makes you feel.
And also keep in mind that it’s not necessary to do them all. Choose your favorite 1-3 and stick with those if they are helping.
-
That makes sense. I’ve paused everything today but Slippery Elm, I will slowly reintroduce one by one and follow the three days rule. Low and slow.
Thank you so much!

Hi Bernadette.
Today I’m experiencing a flare up, I am not sure why, abdominal discomfort, tingling, and cramping, burning sensation, constipation, sensitivity to even water, the pain is intense, naturally this state sends me into more anxiety and panic, nothing in my routine or diet has changed, been sticking to the VPFC, so I’m confused about what could be the trigger this but will observe.
Could you please advise the safest, gentlest approach for food, hydration, and digestion during these flare-ups? I am sticking to Slippery Elm twice a day now, confused why I am constipated today too (I had coconut milk yesterday and some gluten free rice puff cereal- could be the cause) but the pain is too much today and I also don’t want to end up not eating, so I had just some chicken, cooked carrots, some quinoa, cucumber, keeping it very gentle, unable to tolerate much.
I have also noticed that my stool has been somewhat greenish lately as well, sorry for the TMI, just trying to give a full current picture, when the flare up comes it just sends me into full confusion on what to eat and how to ease it.
I am going to include a summary of what I ate the last three days just in case:
4/9:
Breakfast: Boiled egg, cucumber, two olives, teaspoon of coconut oil & honey
Snacks: Grapes followed by Slippery Elm
Lunch: Meat with rice, zucchini, carrots, green beans, some honey after
Snacks/Evening: Pumpkin seeds with blueberries, sweet potato, kale chips, teaspoon coconut oil & honey (couldn’t have a full dinner was still overwhelmed)
5/9:
Breakfast: Boiled egg, rice, olive, bell pepper, lettuce, blueberries, teaspoon coconut oil & honey (lots of palpitations this morning)
Snacks: Bite of kale chips some l-theanine
Lunch: Steak with rice, sautéed green onions, some cabbage, carrots, okra, zucchini, three olives, shortly after had four grapes
Snacks/Evening: Ten pumpkin seeds with small bell pepper and dragon fruit slice, rice puff cereal with coconut milk & honey
Dinner: Chicken strips with vegetables, grapes shortly after, teaspoon coconut oil & honey before bed
6/9 (today):
Breakfast: Chicken with sautéed carrots and cucumber, teaspoon honey, few grapes
Lunch: Quinoa, boiled potato, carrot, cucumber, so much pain had ginger water, lemon balm (also hurt me)
Thank you

Hi @R-S – thanks for sharing your food log.
Question, is there a reason why you’re having the coconut oil + honey also in the mornings and afternoons? My suggestion was to have that before bed to help prevent a hypoglycemic reaction at night before rising. Just curious to know why you’re also taking it during the daytime.
If I compare your food journal from Sep 1-3 to this recent one, there are some new foods that you’ve introduced that could be culprits:
1. Eggs (on 4th and 5th). This wasn’t there Sep 1-3. Eggs are a common gut irritant/food sensitivity in alot of people, especially when “leaky gut” is already suspected.
2. Coconut milk + rice puff cereal on the 5th. Does your coconut milk have gums, oils, additives or stabilizers? Or is it pure coconut milk from a can? Rice puff cereal is obviously processed, even though it’s gluten-free, so that could be hard to tolerate if the gut lining is already sensitive.
3. Kale chips (on 4th and 5th). Kale (raw/dried forms) is high in insoluble fiber (the type that causes faster transit). The extra fiber can be irritating to an already inflamed gut, and that type of fiber can lead to faster transit (which can explain the greenish stool if the timing matches).
4. Potato (on 6th). Nightshades can sometimes aggravate some people.
5. Grapes (4th to 6th). This new fruit is very high in sugar which can quickly ferment in the gut. Depending on how many you had, this could also be a culprit for digestive discomfort.
Here’s how you can experiment to figure out which ones are causing you issues:
- Remove the newer foods (eggs, kale, coconut milk, rice puffs, grapes, potato) while keeping to the “safe base” of chicken, zucchini, carrots, cucumber, rice, slippery elm for for a few days.
- Once you’re back to steady-state, re-introduce one at a time after 3+ days to see if any symptoms return. Have a small portion earlier in the day and track symptoms (bowel changes, abdominal pain, anxiety, palpitations).
Here’s a reintroduction order you can try from what is likely “lowest risk” to “highest risk”:
1. Grapes – small amount only (3-4 pieces)
2. Potato (boiled, plain)
3. Egg (boiled, half first day) – very common sensitivity so observe carefully
4. Kale chips – lots of insoluble fiber
5. Coconut milk only – especially if your coconut milk has “other ingredients”
6. Rice puff cereal – test only if really desired to keep in your diet since it’s processed
Now in terms of rapid relief for anxiety/palpitations and the heightened nervous system state that some of these foods are likely causing, I’d suggest a few helpful hacks:
- Dunking face (up cheeks at least) in ice water in a bowl
- Box breathing – 4 breaths in, hold for 4, 4 breaths out. Can also do 8-8-8 or 4-4-8. Whatever works best for you.
- Humming/gargling/singing out loud
- Going outside and grounding in nature or walking by the beach
All of these help activate the parasympathetic system, which can help the body relax and “unfreeze” from that flight/flight state. I suspect the constipation is a result of the sympathetic dominance, so that should hopefully also get relieved once your body shifts to a more relaxed nervous system state.
And in terms of relieving the abdominal discomfort and cramps, did you try the Iberogast or digestive bitters or antispasmodic teas?
-
Thank you for your detailed feedback 🙏
For the coconut oil + honey, I had started taking it in the daytime the last few days because I felt weak/shaky and thought it helped stabilize me, but I can keep it just for bedtime as you suggested.
I haven’t had access to Iberogast yet trying to sort out getting it, I did find Dr. Mercola’s alcohol-free Digestive Bitters and ordering those which would need at least five days to arrive and might not arrive due to liquid delivery restriction- any capsule or powder form available in case. I also researched the natural bitters list you shared, but most of them came up as unsuitable for me (high FODMAP or histamine-liberating). The only one I feel somewhat safe with right now is ginger, which I’ve been steeping in warm water (not making much of a difference, please let me know if there’s a better way to have it? I did try chewing a little yesterday just to extract the juice directly for any relief). I’m unsure if artichoke would be safe in my case too? The chamomile as well, sometimes it doesn’t make me feel good, please let me know if you know any different, can’t always trust the sources I am researching.
Food-wise, I’ll stop the kale chips (I just baked fresh kale with olive oil/salt), and I also don’t care to keep the rice puff cereal. For now, I’ve gone back to the “safe base” of chicken, rice, carrots, cucumber, and slippery elm. Eggs could also play a role as I asked about them before and then stopped for a while and then decided to try them again, just got tired of having chicken/meat rice with carrots and zucchini, especially for breakfast. The grapes I was having 4-5 only.
The coconut milk/drink:
1- Bio Organic coconut drink (gluten-free)
Ingredients: spring water, coconut-based preparation* (9.4%) (water, coconut*), rice starch*, sea salt, emulsifier: sunflower lecithin, natural coconut flavor*. *— organic.
Pacific foods organic coconut milk unsweetened
Ingredients:
INGREDIENTS: WATER, COCONUT CREAM*, CONTAINS 1% OR LESS OF: COCONUT WATER CONCENTRATE*, GELLAN GUM, GUAR GUM*, NATURAL FLAVOR, SODIUM CITRATE, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, VITAMIN D2, XANTHAN GUM.
I also got (still haven’t used) canned coconut milk by coco life, ingredients: Ingredients: Organic 25% Coconut Water, Organic Guar Gum**
The nervous system hacks that you suggested I have been doing aggressively for the last 24 hours and lots and lots of nervous system work intensely, my gosh it’s so amazing to see how much my anxiety and panic are directly affected by my gut health (in general and even more so lately).
The pain has been very intense and overwhelming, I even woke up with the same abdominal pain this morning, which has been hard to cope with, I took Slippery Elm directly too and slowly sipping the sole water, I didn’t have the full 500ml today upon waking because my abdomen is just in so much aching—the pain has been under left breast towards back, middle right under breast line and lower abdomen and lower left abdomen. My BP has been on the lower end the last two days as well, is the sole water safe to continue with regardless? Thankfully had some bowel movement today and also had some steamed carrots with rice and chicken and cucumber a while ago, but still shaky and wondering if it’s blood sugar?
And for this: while keeping to the “safe base” of chicken, zucchini, carrots, cucumber, rice, slippery elm for a few days, can I change the chicken to steak (not too thick, the smashed one) or beef patty (only safe spices) or minced meat, and can I possibly also have okra and green beans too? Just so I am not repeating the exact same meal thrice a day as that is what got me to start testing new things because it’s so overwhelmingly boring, but I am happy to stick to the safest just thought I would ask, and in regards to having fruits, can I have dragon fruit at least? and the pumpkin seeds? or no? Just trying to calm the visible shakiness and dizziness that’s too much, just feeling very weak.
-
I wanted to check with you regarding Dr. Mercola’s Organic Digestive Bitters Extract that I found, I’ve researched and not sure how true if some are high fodmap and high in histamine so thought I’d ask that they’re safe for me?
Also, Iberogast isn’t possible to order right now, waiting till someone comes and can bring it with them, so I am trying to figure out the easiest immediate access for when things get like this, options or alternatives I could safely use when these intense abdominal flare-ups happen, ideally something low FODMAP, low histamine, and safe for my current state. Even the digestive bitters handout, the majority of them came up as high histamine or histamine liberating/ or unsuitable for low fodmap. If I stick to ginger is that good enough? Sorry having an overwhelming day, stomach upset/low BP and doing hot water bottle and steeped ginger in water and trying to just order the right thing and not ending up with more things I can’t tolerate.
Thank you so much for your guidance 🙏
-
@R-S – if you’re tolerating ginger, you can also try some fennel too for additional anti-spasmodic support.
Artichoke is great for bile support, but won’t really help with spasms/cramps.
The goal of the “safe base” foods is to try and figure out what from that 3-day menu is causing a food sensitivity reaction. It’s fine to add in beef for variety if it’s something you’ve had in the past without issues. Same with dragon fruit and pumpkin seeds. If you’ve been having these in the past without issues, then you can keep eating them. But the idea is to keep the diet bland to minimize variables to help you isolate what might be the trigger when you add foods back in one at a time. Just keep monitoring with a food log.
Oh, and regarding the coconut milk. It’s unnecessary to have any other ingredient other than coconut milk. So please find another brand that offers pure coconut milk only – usually it’s only available in a can.

I am also doing a lot of nervous system work during the day, I just feel the dominant symptoms have remained very high in my abdomen for a long time and hoping for any relief or gudance.
The intensity of my abdominal symptoms is truly getting to my head. Palpitations, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, and anxiety are very high, feeling something stuck in throat or like my abdomen is in my chest, and they are unpredictable despite following diet and remedies. Is this normal? I just want to know that I’m not loosing my mind over an imagined feeling and the discomfort of gut issues that are truly impacting my wellbeing a lot.
Could you please advise what next steps, adjustments, or treatments you could recommend me doing? Do I continue with the safe food, do I adjust anything? Just want to know that this is normal, feeling extremely distressed by the sensation in chest and throat and truly looking for relief, could this last this long? Any additional tips I can do? I watched the IBS/SIBO protocol to educate better and did the fillable handouts for myself as well.
Thank you so so much for your guidance again and again.
-
Sorry one more question, when nausea/ discomfort is this high along with the obvious anxiety, am I supposed to continue eating regardless? Is that even good for me? It confuses me because a part of me doesn’t want to eat at all but another part wants to eat in hopes to calm it down. And I tried to look through B better for some information- does IBS/SIBO also play a role in muscle aches?
-
@R-S regarding your question about whether or not you should eat when you feel nauseous, let your body be the guide. Try both and see what you prefer.
Nausea however is often rooted in the liver/gallbladder, so eliminating anything high in fats (like olive oil, olives, coconut, etc) during these episodes could potentially help as well.
Again, be aware of what you try and take notes of what helps, and what doesn’t.
Are you still working with your homeopath to help deal with acute situations?
-
@R-S let me start off by saying that the symptoms you’re describing are very real physical experiences. Don’t doubt yourself. Many people with gut sensitivity and nervous system dysregulation feel exactly this way, and it can be overwhelming. You are NOT imagining it you’re not losing your mind.
With that said however, since these symptoms have been so persistent and you’re describing them as really intense, it’s probably a good idea to check in with a doctor to rule out anything that may require medical attention such as reflux, gastritis, hiatal hernia, or other upper GI issues. Even if nothing concerning is found, that alone can give you some reassurance and peace of mind that can help guide the next steps.
In the meantime, here are some other things to try that can hopefully help calm the flare that you’re in:
- I know you said your meals are quite bland and boring already, but you can simplify them even more. Try your chicken/veg combo without olive oil or herbs. Again, this can reduce potential irritants and variables.
- Instead of eating smaller and more frequent meals, stick to 3 main meals with at least 4-5 hours between them to allow more digest rest in between meals. Grazing/snacking is also one of the main root causes of SIBO/IBS, so you’ll be hitting 2 birds with 1 stone with this tip if it helps.
- In between meals, continue the soothing support if it’s helping like the slippery elm, fennel/ginger tea if you feel they are helping.
- Wait 15-20 minutes after eating before going for a walk. This might help reduce post-meal discomfort.
Your body is clearly in a heightened state right now, so please rule out anything requiring medical attention, and if that’s all clear, then continue with the “low and slow” approach, both with food and with nervous system work.
-
Thank you so much for your kind words! Over the last few months I’ve done everything but an endoscopy and nothing structural (thankfully) came up. That’s what’s mainly driving me crazy.
It has been over three months of me struggling with gut issues this intense like never before. The only things that doctors have said are IBS/ SIBO- first it was IBS-D and thankfully the diarrhea is done however my abdomen is still not well, and since then I’ve lost over 15+ kgs and I can’t find answers. I was functioning through my withdrawals as normal and then I recall exactly what happened after eating watermelon for around a week (a lot of it) also had sauerkraut daily for around two weeks- then I had a falafel sandwich- then nothing has been the same, spent over a month in bed with stomach pain and diarrhea and couldn’t eat anything at all and the pain was constant for too long and overstimulating me and that’s why I keep saying something from my gut issues causing me to be in this much distress and in return lead me to be in a constant heightened state- I was told I got a virus or food poisoning (rota or else who knows)- I’ve tested and nothing came up- I’ve even done the calprotectin- I’ve done stool analysis tests- everything- and still my gut issues are not getting any better. I have cut gluten dairy and sugar and everything for months now but still. I can’t find answers. I take a few good days or else and then something backfires. I can’t find answers and that’s why I’m here. Still searching for the why and the root of this or what it is that’s going on.
sorry I went on a rant but truly it’s been around three months now of this intense exhausting gut situations that has affected everything in me.

Thank you for the amazing information.
I’ve been reviewing the elemental diet and the whole website regarding everything SIBO, and honestly, it feels quite overwhelming for me in my current state. Finding a practitioner to guide me through it is also challenging, and on top of that, I won’t be able to access the mentioned products/ ingredients delivered to my location nor are they available locally either, the ready ones are quite expensive and also again unfortunately shipping issues, I saw that they have a combination of herbal antimicrobials that I could potentially try would love your input on this? I could access getting those through iHerb.
I’m wondering if it might be possible to explore other options that could still help me manage my symptoms effectively. I want to stay hopeful and give myself a chance, especially since the last couple of days have felt “somewhat” calmer, the elemental diet feels too difficult for me to commit to right now for multiple reasons- I am still exploring options on getting the items, however also reading the website with all the information, also states it could cause digestive distress and since I am navigating more than one thing, I am not sure how to go on about it. The website is so rich in information yet very overhwleming in the amount of suggested supplements and protocols to take and follow, it gets quite confusing. I also just understood there are different types of SIBO, and I don’t actually know what type I am, as thankfully now the diarrhea has subsided and I have normal bowel movement, and I haven’t been able to access a breath test to clarify that. So right now, the amount of information and the steps to start feel overwhelming, even though I want to move forward.
I would really appreciate your feedback on what alternatives might be suitable and how I could go about this in a way that’s realistic for me. I’m eager to find a path forward that allows me to manage my symptoms without feeling completely overwhelmed and realistic for me.
Thank you again and again
-
The site also puts this information (in attached image)- it really causes so much confusion on how to go on and fix this especially looking for relief with so much information. How true is this? Am I making it worst by taking these?
-
@R-S – remember that nutrition is nuanced, and depending on the goal that you want to achieve the same foods can be good or bad so don’t let that deter you from the initial primary goal of “calming the fire”.
Given that you’re starting to feel better with more time between meals, I believe you would benefit from an elemental diet to give your body the digestive rest it needs. That is also a part of gut healing, with the combined added benefit of addressing SIBO in as little as 2 weeks.
I searched my practitioner forum for other product options, and the company mBIOTA was mentioned to be a clinically tested, effective elemental diet for SIBO that is also more palatable than other brands out there. I also just got off the chat session with the company to learn more. They are available for order directly from their website therefore a prescription from a practitioner isn’t required. They do however still recommend that it be done under the guidance of a healthcare provider. They ship internationally so you could ask your homeopath to be under his supervision if you don’t have access to anyone else.
Please check them out – their results look promising and hopefully can be delivered to you.
Update: I just received a reply from them. Unfortunately, they don’t yet ship to Jordan, but they do ship to Dubai and other international locations. Perhaps someone can bring it to you from Dubai?

Thank you so much!
My question is if there is an alternative option I can follow other than having to go on the elemental diet?
-
@R-S the elemental diet like mBIOTA is an option because it’s clinically effective. Other options may not provide the same results.
If you’re starting to feel better though by spacing out your meals by 4-5 hours, then continue doing that. If you continue to improve, then move onto the next stage of supporting the 3 main digestive players, which is explained in our SIBO/IBS Resolution program. Once stomach acid, bile and enzymes are well supported, there’s usually a positive downstream effect. And then once those players are well supported and if there’s still a need, the next step to consider is “the fight” to kill off the overgrowth.
